Bacon Avocado Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

Bacon Avocado Air Fryer Grilled Cheese is a unique twist on the traditional sandwich. It's easy to make and doesn't require any stove-top cooking!

Grilled cheese is always a crowd favorite. But did you know that you can make it faster and healthier in the air fryer? This method uses a small amount of butter or oil to grease the cooking chamber. Then, your sandwich will be placed right on the mesh rack for maximum air circulation. I like to use an air fryer lid  to make the sandwich easier to flip.

The ingredients are simple: Bread, butter or oil (I prefer avocado oil), cheese and bacon. I've included a basic recipe below that's great for experimentation. Feel free to substitute any cheese or ingredient you have on hand.  The final result is a crispy, gooey sandwich that's sure to impress.

Grilled cheese is a family favorite lunch or easy dinner in our household.  I usually cook it on my stovetop in a frying pan. Even with my best efforts, the cheese can sometimes get burned or stick to the pan. I wanted a better result without spending more time in the kitchen.

The air fryer to the rescue! It makes perfectly crisp sandwiches without any of those problems. The melted cheese also had no chance of sticking. This sandwich cooks in 5 minutes total. That includes the prep time for bread and cooking bacon.

A few notes about air fryers: Most models operate at around 350 degrees Fahrenheit, though exact temperatures vary by manufacturer. The air fryer lid should not come in direct contact with the sandwich after grilling since it can get hot enough to melt cheese. I use a small silicone mat to prevent any contact.

How do I reheat grilled cheese

Grilled cheese sandwiches are really best enjoyed freshly made. However, if you need to reheat your sandwiches I have some instructions for you.

You have a few options to reheat this delicious sandwich. You can do it on a cookie sheet in your regular oven. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and place your leftover grilled sandwiches on your cookie sheet and heat for three to four minutes or until warmed all the way through.

To reheat your sandwiches in your air fryer, preheat your air fryer to 330 degrees and then cook for 3 minutes. After three minutes check to see if your bread is crispy and your cheese is melted. If not return to the air fryer for an additional two to three minutes.

How many air fryer grilled cheese can I make at a time

I can usually fit two or three sandwiches in my air fryer at one. You do not want your sandwiches to touch while they are in your air fryer basket, so how many that will fit will depend on the size of your air fryer.

Can I leave off the avocado

Yes! This is the great thing about grilled cheese. You can mix and match ingredients to suit your taste. Many of my friends don't like avocado so it's a tasty way for them to try the health benefits without really knowing it's in there.

What kind of bread should I use

You can use any type of  bread that you want. I have made sandwiches with naan, ciabatta bread, and sandwich buns. If you want a really crispy grilled cheese it's best to use a thicker slice of bread like sourdough or multigrain bread.

What kind of cheese works best

I like to use a combination of different cheeses. I typically choose about half a cup of shredded cheese and mix in slices or chunks of cheese as well. My favorite combinations are cheddar, Colby jack, pepper jack and feta or brie and gouda. Experiment until you find the one that suits your taste buds.

How do I choose a ripe avocado

Ripe avocados can be a bit tricky. They should not feel squishy at all when you press on them, but they also don't need to be rock hard. You are looking for a little give in your avocado without being squishy.  A ripe avocado will feel very heavy for its size as well. Let your eyes be the judge, the darker green an avocado usually means that it is ripe (though there are always exceptions). A ripe avocado will also give a little when you press down on it with your fingers and should have no brown spots. If there are brown spots, the avocado is overripe and will make your sandwich soggy.

How do I slice an avocado

To slice an avocado, cut the avocado in half and then remove the seed. To do this, I find it easiest to run a knife lengthwise around the edge of the pit like you are cutting through butter. Then place your knife on top of the pit and give it a gentle whack with your chef's knife or a rolling pin. The pit should come right out in one easy movement. Once you remove the pit, then you can scoop your avocado out of the shell. After removing the avocado from the shell you can slice your avocado. Use a small paring knife or vegetable peeler to slice thin slices of avocado.

Bacon Avocado Air Fryer Grilled Cheese is a unique twist on the traditional sandwich. It's easy to make and doesn't require any stove-top cooking! Plus, it can be tailored for your tastes with different cheeses or guacamole toppings. You'll love this recipe if you like crispy bacon and melted cheese in every bite of your grilled cheese sandwich. One thing I recommend when making Bacon Avocado Air Fryer Grilled Cheese is using an air fryer basket that has holes all around so you don't have to flip the sandwiches half way through cooking time since they will get browned on both sides while sticking together during flipping. This makes for one delicious treat without having to turn on your oven!
