Colorful Layered Cupcakes
Colorful Layered Cupcakes are so fun and simple to make. Using a boxed cake mix you can have a festive and colorful dessert in under an hour.
The best part of these cupcakes? They're really easy to prepare - in minutes, you'll have a tray full of gorgeous pastel-colored treats that are perfect for any occasion.
You can use as many colors as you like (I used three) and create different designs by adding some sprinkles or topping with frosting swirls. But the key is just having fun with it! Experiment and see what happens when you do something new!
These cupcakes are a perfect way to get the kids in the kitchen to help you make them. They can help mix, color, frost and sprinkle these delicious cupcakes. Food tastes better when it's fun to make.
Can I use homemade cake mix instead
Yes. However, it's important that you use a white cake batter even if you are using homemade. Using a yellow cake batter will prevent your colors from being vibrant. No matter what colors you decide to use you want a white cake base for your colors to stand out.
How do I get the batter into the muffin tins evenly
I fill each cupcake liner about 3/4 full. This will help you get even sized cupcakes. Since you are filling your cupcake liners by piping the batter, try to squeeze the same amount of each color into your cupcake pan.
How do I store Pastel Rainbow Cupcakes
Store your cupcakes in an airtight container on the counter. There is no need to put your cupcakes in the fridge.
How long do Pastel Rainbow Cupcakes last
Pastel Rainbow Cupcakes are best stored at room temperature for up to 4-7 days. Since they're made with fresh ingredients the sooner you consume them, the better!
Can I freeze Pastel Rainbow Cupcakes
Freezing pastel rainbow cupcakes is not recommended because they contain a lot of frosting which can clump when frozen. If you plan on freezing your Colorful Layered Cupcakes be sure to freeze your cupcakes unfrosted for best results.
What kind of food coloring should I use
For the best color payoff, use gel food coloring. Liquid food coloring tends to fade when mixing with frosting and cupcake batters.
Can I change the colors of these cupcakes
Of course! You can use as many different colors as you want, however the more colors and layers in your cupcakes the more difficult it will be to get a smooth color blend when layering your cupcakes.
How do get my frosting to look nice on these cupcakes
To get a pretty swirl or hive frosting like I have, you will need to pipe your frosting on top of your cupcakes. You do not need a piping bag to frost these cupcakes, you can use a storage bag with the corner cut off. Then pipe a wide band of frosting in a circle around the top of your cupcakes.
What kind of sprinkles should I use
I used circle sprinkles for my Colorful Layered cupcakes however you can use any kind of sprinkle you'd like. I always like to use a softer jimmie style sprinkle instead of the hard sprinkles that are crunchy when you bite into your frosting.
Should I use cupcake liners
Absolutely you should use cupcake liners. Cupcake liners prevent your cupcakes from sticking to the pan and also help keep your cupcakes moist on the outside because they do not touch the pan directly which can make them crispy on the outside.
