As some of you may know, I am the varsity volleyball coach at our local high school. Before the "Crazy COVID" times, we were lucky enough to play at a couple tournaments each year that required a bit of travel and a night in a hotel. I always look forward to these trips. A little extra time getting to know my players is always fun, and just something outside of the ordinary schedule makes for some exciting volleyball.

While playing the game is our top priority, I have to be honest that we always are sure to put together a list of tasty snacks to get us through the long days. And I can't count the number of times that my players request puppy chow. When I quickly agree, they do a little celebration. What they don't know is just how easy it is to make.

I'd like to keep it a secret, but here I am, sharing all that deliciousness with all of you! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Chex Mix Puppy Chow Recipe

This easy puppy chow recipe will take your snack game to a whole new level. It uses simple ingredients and gives you that perfect combo of sweet and salty with that satisfying crunch.

If you’re wondering what puppy chow is, think of it as a snack mix made with Chex cereal coated in a delicious mixture of peanut butter, vanilla and butter and then covered with powdered sugar and sprinkles.

It’s such a funny name, I know. Puppy chow. And it’s other popular name, muddy buddy, isn’t much better. The name more or less comes from the appetizer’s resemblance to dog food but it couldn’t be less like dog food!

Puppy chow comes from the Midwest and is a staple at sleepovers and children’s parties. So if you haven’t heard of it before, I hope this explains it. I also hope you give this puppy chow recipe a try. It’s the best.

Directions for Muddy Buddies

Find a large mixing bowl that has a cover. (This will be important later on!) Pour Chex cereal in it and set it aside.

In a medium microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt peanut butter, butter, milk chocolate chips, and white chocolate chips in 30-second intervals. Be sure to stir every 30-second to avoid over cooking and burning the mixture. When the mixture is smooth, stir in the vanilla.

Pour chocolate/peanut butter mixture over top of the cereal.

This is where the cover comes into play! Put the cover on and toss the cereal until it is completely coated in chocolate.

Next, sprinkle powdered sugar over top. Put the cover on again and toss until the cereal is coated in powdered sugar.

Sprinkle powdered sugar over top. Put the cover on again and toss until the cereal is coated in powdered sugar.

And now for the finishing touches! Add the M&Ms and sprinkles and enjoy!
