Air Fryer Banana Mug Cake

Here's the deal...I'm not a HUGE fan of making a mess cooking and then having to clean it up. Please tell me I'm not the only one. Not only does that mean that I dread the fact that after eating my sweet treat I still have to clean the kitchen but it also means that I have to do it typically all by myself.

It's safe to say that the downside to baking and cooking is that you then have to clean up that mess. But this just might be what I love most about this delicious mug cake recipe. I get to add everything to a mug and cook. That's it. No extra bowls, nothing. Music to your ears, right?

Not only is this a simple and fast dessert but it's DELICIOUS in flavor, too. This just so happens to be my favorite go-to dessert when I'm wanting something fast and easy.

Because who doesn't like the winning combination of bananas and chocolate chips?!

Why is it called a mug cake?

It's all in the name! This simple dessert is made in a mug and eaten straight from the mug, too! Nothing like a sweet treat that you can hold with a handle!

Can you add other ingredients to this recipe?

You bet. This is what makes this air fryer banana mug cake recipe so great. You can add in chopped pecans, shredded coconut, and anything else that you want. Sometimes I make it with chocolate chips, and sometimes I don't. Other days I add in a scoop of peanut butter to really take it over the top.

As long as you keep the cooking method the same, you're not going to have any issues with this simple cake in a mug. There's really nothing wrong with adding whatever ingredients that you'd like to this cake recipe so have fun in doing so.

Do you add toppings to a mug cake?

It's totally up to you. You can add toppings like whipped cream or even some extra chocolate chips to enhance the overall flavor and taste. You can also add on a bit of powdered sugar.

Or, if you're not wanting to make it any sweeter with processed sugars, natural sugars work great. Fresh strawberries added on top are sweet with natural flavors.

How To Make Air Fryer Banana Mug Cake

The best part about this simple air fryer recipe is that in less than 10 minutes, you're all done! Can you believe that life in the sweet lane can be this simple and good?!

Directions for making banana mug cake

Combine mashed banana, flour, baking powder, maple syrup, and milk in a 12 oz mug.

Whisk until the batter is uniform.

Stir in walnuts and half of chocolate chips.

Air fry at 350ºF for six to eight minutes or until the center is set.

Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top and serve.

How do you know the it's cooked all the way through?

There are a couple of cues that you can look out for. First off, there shouldn't be any type of jiggle to the mug cake. It should be solid and hold its shape. If it does jiggle, it's not done.

You can also do the toothpick test and make certain it's done as well. This is where you insert a toothpick into the center of the mug cake to check and make certain it's clean. If the toothpick comes out of the middle clean, it's done and ready to start cooling.

If there is still a bunch of wet-looking batter, you need to give it a few more moments of cook time.

Can you make this in something other than a mug?

You can. I just like the mug because it has a handle and is super fun to eat. But as long as you use a container that can withstand higher temperatures and heat, you should be able to recreate this simple dessert in other containers as well.

How to store leftover banana mug cake

If you're lucky enough to have any leftovers, just pop the mug in the fridge until you're ready to eat it again. I would put a bit of aluminum foil over the top to keep it as fresh as possible for as long as possible.

How to reheat mug cake

Once you're ready to eat and enjoy, you can pop in the microwave for a few seconds of time to reheat. I ALWAYS add a few extra chocolate chips at this time because you can never have too much chocolate, in my opinion.

If you want to reheat and enjoy it on a plate, just scoop it out of the mug prior to reheating and put the bowl or plate in the microwave instead. This is a simple way to reheat and enjoy super fast!

I hope you have fun with this delicious recipe. It's such a great way to have a unique and flavorful dessert that literally takes minimal effort on your part. And the end result? Complete tastebud satisfaction. Trust me on this one—you're not going to want to wait!
