Raise your hand if you're tired of making food that requires you to spend hours later cleaning up your mess? Can you see my hand raised high over my hand? Not only is it raised but I'm swinging it around for everyone to see.

I LOVE cooking. I LOVE eating. But I don't love that it's so hard to get motivated to clean up the hundreds of bowls and spoons and forks and whisks that are just taunting me from the kitchen counter.

This is why I love this cake in a mug recipe. I get to dirty up one bowl, and one mug. And that's pretty much all I have to worry about. It's a stress-free way to make up a delicious dessert that tastes legit like homemade cake.

Oh, and did I mention that this mug cake recipe takes just 70 SECONDS to make. That's literally just 1 minute and 10 seconds of time. For a dessert. Get outta here.

Just gather up the simple ingredients to get started.

  • milk
  • vegetable oil
  • brown sugar
  • vanilla
  • flour
  • cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • peanut butter
  • mini chocolate chips

How to make mug cakes

  • In a small bowl, whisk milk, vegetable oil, brown sugar, and vanilla together. Add flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Whisk again.
  • Pour batter into a greased coffee mug that holds at least 10 oz. Drop peanut butter into the batter.
  • Sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  • Microwave for 70 seconds or until the cake is set.

Why are mug cakes hard?

If your mug cake has a hard texture after cooking it, there's a good chance that you cooked it too long. (hard to believe when it only takes 70 seconds to make, right?!)

But different microwaves have different power settings so it's something to keep in mind for sure. The positive outlook is that since you're just making one easy mug cake, you can redo it quickly and find the perfect balance fast.

Since this recipe has milk, it does a good job of keeping it moist during the cooking process.

How do you store a mug cake?

The longevity of leftover mug cakes isn't long so you need to be certain that you're going to eat it within a day or making it. After that, you might as well just take another 70 seconds and whip up a fresh one.

How do you reheat leftover mug cake?

Just pop it back into the fridge and reheat for 15-20 seconds. That's it!

Are mug treats good?

Very good. Delicious, in fact. I've made this simple recipe so many times because of the taste and flavor. I also love that it actually helps me out with portion control as well.

Since you don't have to bake an entire cake, you can use this recipe as a simple treat for one. Because sometimes we don't want to have the same thing again and again so a one-and-done type recipe is awesome.

Tips for making a cake in a mug

Even though I think you're going to find this cake recipe crazy simple, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

Make certain that you carefully choose a mug that is microwave safe. Don't put anything in the microwave to cook with that shouldn't be there.

Learn from one of my "ouchie" lessons by making certain that the handle of the mug isn't scorching hot. I don't know why but some mug handles will get super hot and others won't. I suppose it's based upon the type of materials that it's made with but it's still something important to keep in mind.

Be careful when you're eating and taking that first bite because the cake does hold in the heat. The top layer will be cooler than the middle of the cake so this is important to not burn your mouth.

As you can see, this simple cake recipe is fast and easy to make and has a ton of fun ideas to really make it your own. If you're wanting a dessert that you don't have to share, don't miss out on this simple cake recipe! It's literally the best single-serve cake recipe, ever!
