This Christmas Tree Cake will be the centerpiece of your holiday dessert table. It's easy to make, and it looks like a festive tree! It's perfect for any occasion - from potlucks to office parties.

Christmas Tree Cake

Christmas is a time of love, joy, and happiness. It's a time to spend with family and friends. And most importantly—it's a time for cake! That being said, what better way to celebrate the holiday season than by baking up this festive Christmas tree cake?

Ingredients

You only need a few ingredients for this cake and most of the ingredients you may already have on hand which can save you a trip to the grocery store.

  • boxed white cake mix and all required ingredients
  • powdered sugar
  • butter
  • vanilla
  • milk
  • green food coloring
  • brown food coloring
  • colorful sprinkles

Instructions

This recipe is really quite simple to make. Just follow the instructions below closely, and you'll have a delicious-looking dessert that will be sure to impress all of your family and friends!

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Step 2: Prepare a 9x13 cake pan by lining it with parchment paper and spraying it with cooking oil.  Set aside.

Step 3: Prepare cake batter according to the box directions.

Step 4: Add green food coloring until desired color is reached.

Step 5: Transfer batter to prepared cake pan.

Step 6: Bake according to box directions.

Step 7: Allow cake to cool completely. Remove cake from pan by lifting the parchment paper.

Step 8: Using a sharp knife, cut cake into a tree shape.

Step 9: Using the part that you cut off, cut out a small rectangle for the trunk of the tree.  Place it under the tree. (If your anything like me, your family will help you quickly eat the remaining cake that you cut away)

Step 10: Prepare frosting by beating powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla together.

Step 11: Add milk until desired consistency is reached. 

Step 12: Separate out a small amount of frosting for the trunk. Add brown food coloring until desired color is reached.

Step 13: Add green food coloring to the remaining frosting until desired color is reached.

Step 14: Frosting tree and trunk with the correct colored frosting. 

Step 15: Using a fork, create marks on the tree to represent pine branches.

Step 16: Add sprinkles to the tree.

Substitutions

Cake: Instead of using cake mix you can use your favorite homemade cake recipe.

Frosting: Don't want to make homemade frosting? Two cans of store-bought frosting can be used instead.

Different Frosting: You can use green and white frosting or any other color that you prefer. Who said you can't have a white or pink Christmas tree?

Different Cake: A chocolate cake mix would pair nicely with the colors of this cake. Though, you won't be able to dye your cake mix green if you use a chocolate cake mix.

Tips:

  • Don't have sprinkles? Crushed candy canes would be an excellent substitute!
  • If you are having trouble with your frosting looking smooth, try putting it in your refrigerator for a few minutes before applying it to the cake.
  • When creating the marks on the tree, don't press too hard or the fork will go all the way to the bottom of your cake.
  • The best time to add sprinkles is right after you frost the tree so they stick to the frosting well.
